The best way to live longer is not to die. However, seeing as fountains of youth are in short supply, the next best thing to do is to put the following 10 tips to increase your longevity into practise.

1. Watch Those Stress Levels
Humanity has probably never experienced more stress and anxiety as it does now. According to Dr Greger, ongoing stress can lead to an overabundance of cortisol in the body. The so-called stress hormone can affect the thyroid, and it can lead to weight gain.
2. Stop Smoking
Whether you smoke cigarettes, or you vape, you need to quit that stuff if you want to boost your longevity. Smoking tobacco is one of the leading yet preventable causes of heart disease, and it can lead to issues such as aneurysm, high blood pressure, haemorrhages, heart attacks, and strokes.
3. Drink Less Alcohol
Another tip to live longer is to drink less alcohol. The ideal would be to give it up entirely, but you do not need to go to such an extreme. Dr Greger said that it is better to moderate one’s intake than to overindulge. He added that the least harmful alcohol is red wine.
4. Don’t Eat Too Much Chicken
We’ve been so conditioned to think of chicken and other white meat as being healthier than red meat that most of us do not even question that claim. According to Dr Greger, there certainly was some truth to that statement a century ago. However, thanks to selective breeding and other genetic manipulation, chicken is on average 12% fattier than it was 100 years ago. In fact, it can be just as fatty, if not fattier, than beef, so it is best to consume it in moderation.
5. Eat Less Red Meat
The above tip about chicken is not a green light to eat as much red meat as you can. Dr Greger said that research points to a link between red meat consumption and cancer. He added that one of the best food decisions you can make is to adopt a plant-based diet.
6. Avoid Fad Diets
Fad diets such as the paleo and keto diets are often touted as fantastic ways to lose weight. However, they can lead to serious health issues in the long run; issues such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
7. Get Enough Rest
Another longevity-increasing tip from Dr Greger is to get enough rest. He explained that a growing body of evidence indicates that regularly getting less than 7 hours of sleep per day can have a negative impact on body and mind.
8. Lose Weight
According to the World Health Organisation, obesity can lead to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, some types of cancer, and musculoskeletal disorders. Dr Greger said that obesity is the third biggest cause of death in the UK. He added that the best way to lose weight is to eat lots of beans, greens, fruit, and berries every day, and to cut processed meats and fizzy soft drinks out of your diet.
9. Diet Over DNA
There is no denying that some people have a genetic predisposition to obesity. However, Dr Greger pointed out that this does not mean that obesity is inescapable. Such a predisposition only means something when an unhealthy diet is involved.
10. Exercise Every Day
The last tip to live longer is to exercise moderately for 90 minutes every day. Dr Greger said that exercise does not need to be an intense workout at the gym. A brisk walk daily can do you the world of good, so get moving!
