The Wizard Returns in Book of Oz Lock N Spin Slot

In December 2018 Microgaming released their Book of Oz slot in association with Triple Edge Studios. While many people thought this would be just another substandard Book of Ra clone, the game was anything but ordinary.

Picking up on the Wizard of Oz, Book of Oz features high quality graphics, smooth game play, inventive themes, free spins and a Wild symbol. Most importantly, it gave players the ability to respin any one of the 5 reels as many times as they liked to trigger bigger wins. This proved to be a hit at more than one online casino around the globe, and inspired many developers to build on the concept.

Now Microgaming is back with the much-awaited sequel, Book of Oz Lock N Spin. It’s hard to imaging how they would top their first game, but they certainly have!

Back to the Emerald City

Book of Oz Lock N Spin was developed by Triple Edge Studios and will go live on the Microgaming Quickfire platform on the 24th of September. In this sequel, Triple Edge Studios have built on the original game and just made it a little more awesome.

From the outside, it may look similar, but the key is in the name. The Lock N Spin feature is where the magic lies. Instead of just being able to respin one of the reels, you now get the chance to lock the reels and spin 4 out of the 5 reels as many times as you want. Choose to spin one, or all of them at the same time at cost per reel. They also decided to increase the overall jackpot to 5000 coins while keeping the Wild symbols, Scatters and Free spins bonus round.

Game Specs and Details

In terms of the build of the game, Book of Oz Lock N Spin is fairly similar to the original. The game features a setup of 5 spinning reels with 3 rows and 10 active paylines. The interesting thing is that it has two different RTPs. The first is 96.35% without the Reel Lock feature and the second is 96.60% with the Lock N Spin feature active. This clearly shows that using the new feature gives you a better chance of landing a winning combination.

The volatility rating is very high, which means you should expect long periods of fewer smaller wins followed by a decent size payout that arrives unexpectedly. This is a game designed to be played for longer periods and not short gaming sessions.

Looking at the bet options, the coin size can be set from 0.01 to 0.50 and is automatically set on the minimum. The total number of coins you can be per spin is 50 with an overall bet minimum of 0.1 and a maximum of 0.5. The total number of coins you can win on a max bet is 250 000 for landing all 5 of the highest paying symbols across the reels.

Understanding the Lock N Spin Feature

The symbols in the Book of Oz sequel are the same as those in the original slot. The book is the highest paying symbol and is also the Scatter, triggering the free spins round. There is also the wizard in the top hat followed by the different vials containing the essence of courage, heart and so on. The lower paying symbols are also the same, and include the Jack to Ace high cards.

The biggest feature in this sequel is of course the Lock N Spin. This can be activated at the end of any regular spin. For example, if you spin the reels and land 2 Scatter symbols on reels 2 and 3, you can choose to lock those in place and spin the other reels to try and find a third Scatter. The maximum number of reels you can lock is 4, and you can choose any of the 5 in play.

Wilds, Free Spins and a Special Symbol

The Wild symbol in this game is also the Scatter symbol, which is the book. This is an interesting twist, but works quite well to provide bigger payouts. As a Wild symbol, the book can replace any other symbol to form a combination. When you land 3 or more book symbols on the reels, this automatically triggers the free spins round. The more book symbols that trigger the feature, the more spins you are awarded.

If you land just 3 symbols, you are awarded 10 free spins. If you trigger the feature with 4 symbols, you get 12 spins and if you land all 5 you get the maximum of 25 free spins. At the start of the free spins feature, the game initiates a special expanding symbol. This will expand to fill the entire reel making it easier to find a win. You can choose to keep the symbol where it is, or you can choose to shuffle the symbol to a different position before you begin your bonus session.
